To apply for an eTa it is required to be in possession of:
- a valid passport, issued by one of the visa-exempt countries;
- an email address;
- a credit card, or a possibility of completing your application with payment with one of the many available electronic payment methods.
To fulfil the application for eTA authorisation, you are compelled to provide only the most essential personal and passport details; there is no need for your attaching any additional documents.
Each applicant has to enrol a separate application. E.g. for a family of 3, there have to be 3 separate applications enrolled, with 3 separate passports numbers and 3 individual cases will have to be sent to the government of Canada.
Exempt from the obligation of applying for an eTA are:
- Canadian citizens who may or may not hold a valid Canadian passport at the moment (Dual citizenship cases);
- permanent residents of Canada (with a valid permanent resident card);
- the United States of America passport holders.
Requirements on arrival
Once your eTA will be granted by the Canadian government, it will be sent to the email address provided in the application form. An eTA number will be automatically assigned to your passport number electronically. There is no need for you to print the grant confirmation out. The only document that is required at the airport and will be requested by the customs officials is the valid passport, that has been used while applying for an eTA.
An eTA will remain valid for a period of 5 years, from the issuance date, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Since a granted eTA is electronically assigned to your passport, once you exchange it for a new one, it is required for you to acquire a new eTA before your planned arrival to Canada.
